Perkins’ Good Earth Farm

What is the name of your business?

Perkins’ Good Earth Farm

How long have you been in business?

We have been in business since 2009.

What product or service do you provide?

We provide people the veggies and local foods they NEED and LOVE! We are a certified organic vegetable farm that offers four seasons of veggie adventure through our CSA program, farm stand where we sell not only our own produce but also foods and products from other local farmers, our certified farm kitchen where we make soups, salads, granola, and other good-for-you grab-and-go foods and drinks, and wholesale produce and kitchen items through our partnership with Region Roots.

How is your business unique to the community?

We offer certified organic and regenerative produce grown using bio-intensive methods such as cover crops, organic inputs, bare fallow periods, skim plowing, and minimum tillage. We offer a true partnership with our customers and full transparency, as they can see exactly how and where their food is grown while getting out and enjoying the beauty of our farm.

What led you to start your business?

We worked at other Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms around the country, and decided that we wanted to bring the same excellent produce and style of farming to the town I (Julie) grew up in–DeMotte, IN.

Describe one “lesson learned” moment when starting or expanding your business.

I learned the importance of keeping good financial records, and then using those records/reports to make financial decisions that keep us profitable while doing what we love.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting a business?

Get to know other people who do what you think you want to do. Ask to visit their businesses and get an inside-look at what’s all involved. If possible, do an apprenticeship within that business. Do the work to make sure you have a customer base for the type of business you want to start.

How can a customer connect with you?
